Frequently Asked Questions about Allegheny Tennis

1.) Should I make a video?
Yes!  By making a video we can get a first hand look at your playing ability and let you know where you might fit in on the team. It is for your benefit as well as ours because we will let you know how you compare to our current players.

2.) What should I put in the video and how long should it be?
It only needs to be 10-15 minutes. Hit some groundstrokes, volleys, serves, overheads, and play a few points out. Please do not edit the video to only show you hitting winners. We want to see the real you! Also, make sure we know which player you are in the video. For example: attach a note that says “I am the one in the red shirt and white hat.”

3.) Where do I send my recruiting video?
Please send your video to: Coach Luteran, Box AC, Allegheny College, 520 North Main St., Meadville, PA 16335 or directly to my email: jluteran@allegheny.edu

4.) Do you travel anywhere for spring break?
Yes! Every year we take a trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.  The trip lasts approximately one week and we play other teams from all over the country.  We stay right on the beach at the Spinnaker Resort at Waterside.  In addition to playing tennis every day, we also spend time going to the beach, going to dinner, and doing some shopping. Here is a link to our video from spring break: Allegheny Tennis Spring Break

5.) How many courts do you have?  Do you have lights?  Do you have indoor courts?
We have 12 outdoor courts with lights and a newly installed sound system. We have speakers on all the courts and a volume control for every court. Our players plug in their iPods during practice and for pre-match music. Before every match we introduce the players on a wireless microphone and play the National Anthem. We also have 4 indoor courts located at the Wise Center which is our indoor athletic facility on campus. Here are is a link to see some pictures of our facility: Allegheny Tennis Facilities

6.) Do you offer scholarships?
As a division III institution we are not allowed to give athletic scholarships.  However, as an applicant you do have the potential to earn academic scholarships and financial assistance.  We encourage you to call the financial aid office at 1-800-835-7780 with any specific questions. You should also fill out the Net Price Calculator and the FAFSA.  Here is the link to the Net Price Calculator: Net Price Calculator.

7.) Do you have a fall or spring season?  How long do the seasons last?
We have two full seasons at Allegheny College in both the fall and the spring.  However, the spring is our conference season and will be longer and more rigorous.  The fall season lasts approximately a month and a half with around 5 to 7 matches.  It begins in late August and runs until the beginning of October.  The spring season begins in early February and runs until the end of April unless we go to the NCAA national tournament which is in early May.

8.) Does the team train together during the off-season?
Yes, the team is encouraged to train together in the off-season.  We provide work-out plans for the players and encourage them to find lifting partners to work-out with or do team lifting.  As far as hitting goes, many players find time to come in and hit on there own or the captains will sometimes run practices throughout the off-season.  According to NCAA rules, coaches are not allowed to work with players in the off-season.

9.) How many hours a week does the team practice/play matches?
Practice runs for two hours a day typically 5-6 days a week with a few exceptions here and there.  We are not allowed to practice 7 days in a row by NCAA rules. Some weeks we will give our players a day of rest to catch up with their academics and sleep and some weeks we will have practice on a Saturday if we find it necessary.  Along with practices there are matches mixed in during the week and on the weekends.  The time commitment is substantial and there will be weekends where you will be gone for extended periods of time.

10.) What is the relationship between athletics and academics?
Here at Allegheny we understand the rigors of the course load which our athletes are faced with and we emphasize that academics come first; you are here for your education.  This is why we keep our practices short, but intense.  We want our players to show up on time, work hard, and leave on time so they can be involved in other aspects of college life.  Our athletes at Allegheny typically have a higher GPA than the general student body because they learn to manage their time better and they have full time coaches monitoring their classroom performance.

11.) What is your target size for the team, or how many roster spots are you looking to fill?
There is no target size for our team and there are not a certain number of roster spots that we are looking to fill every year.  Some years we may keep 10 players and other years we may keep 15 players.  Essentially it depends on how things pan out after try outs.

12.) Do your men's and women's teams practice together?
Yes and no.  There will be days where the men's and women's team practice at the same time and drills and hitting will take place between the two teams.  There will also be days where the teams practice at different times in order for both coaches to focus on the individual teams.  There will also be days where the practice time overlaps. For example: the women might come from 4:30-6:30 and the men might come from 5:30-7:30.  There is one thing that you can be sure of: the men's and women's teams are in constant contact with each other and many great friendships evolve from the amount of time spent with each other.

13.) How many coaches do you have and are they full time?
We have 2 full time coaches (head coach and assistant coach). This is something you should look into during your college search. Most college tennis coaches are part time, which means they usually teach at a club or teach classes during the day and they are only around for practice. We are here all day and we are always ready and willing to hit with our players outside of practice. Our players take full advantage of this and they come in for extra help during the day all the time.  Here is a link to our coaching staff bios: Coaching Staff Bios

The NCAC has teams from Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Here is the link for the conference website: North Coast Athletic Conference Homepage
