MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College women's basketball team trailed by four at halftime, but struggled after the break and fell to Carnegie Mellon University, 88-59, in the final game of the Greg Richards '08 Memorial Tip-Off Classic this evening.
Allegheny (2-2, 0-0 NCAC) closed the first half on a 14-6 run and finished it off with a buzzer-beater lay-up by senior guard
Rachel Vigliotti. However, Carnegie Mellon (3-0, 0-0 UAA) answered with a 27-8 stretch in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Senior forward
Emma Pellicano collected her 16th career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four assists, two blocks, and two steals to fill the stat sheet. The Gators received a spark off the bench in the form of freshman guard
Delaney Arbore, who led the team with 17 points on seven-of-12 shooting.
Allegheny struggled from the field as a team, converting just 26.8 percent (22-82) of their shot attempts and 16.7 percent (4-24) of their casts from international waters. Meanwhile, the Tartans shot 45.7 percent (32-70) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-9) from behind the arc.
The Gators held a 31-9 edge in bench points thanks to Arbore's 17. Fellow freshman
Jazmen Moore added five in six minutes, while their classmate
Olivia Barkley chipped in with four points.
Carnegie Mellon was paced by Lisa Murphy, who tallied 34 points and 17 rebounds. Liza Otto added 22 points and 10 caroms for the Tartans.
Pellicano was named to the All-Classic Team after the contest, joining the aforementioned Murphy, Rachel Durbin of Westminster (Pa.) College, and Olivia Besancon of Muskingum University.
Allegheny continues a stretch of six consecutive games at home this coming Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 6:00 p.m. when Washington & Jefferson College comes to town.
