OBERLIN, Ohio – Host Oberlin used a stifling defense and an impressive passing game to earn a 48-9 Homecoming victory over the Gators.
Led by quarterback Lucas Poggiali, the Yeomen (2-3, 2-2 NCAC) out-gained Allegheny (0-5, 0-4 NCAC) 690-202 in total offense, with Poggiali throwing for 506 yards and four touchdowns.
The Yeomen scored on each of their first three possessions of the opening quarter, and converted on two-point conversions each time, to take a 24-0 lead just over 10 minutes into play.
The Gators got onto the scoreboard in the waning seconds of the opening quarter, when the snap on an Oberlin punt attempt sailed through the end zone, resulting in a safety for Allegheny to make the score 24-2.
The Allegheny defense would tighten as the game entered the second quarter. Freshman Tristan Rhoades recorded his first career interception to halt the Yeomen's first drive of the second stanza, before their next possession came to an end when the Gators forced an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Oberlin's defense was even stronger, limiting the Gators to just 13 plays for 27 yards over the second quarter. The Yeomen scored the only points of the quarter when Blake Buckhannon bowled in from four yards out with 51 seconds remaining until intermission.
After an Oberlin touchdown made the score 36-2 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, Gator freshman Jonah Tanner returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to the Oberlin 40 yardline. The Gator offense looked to go to work, with quarterback Logan Lee completing three passes for 25 yards to set up first down at the Yeomen 20. The drive would then stall, however, with Oberlin's Jabari Clemons intercepting a pass in the end zone on third down.
The two teams would trade scoreless drives over the duration of the third quarter, with the Gators twice more holding on fourth downs, highlighted by a Max Sessions strip sack and Colten Buzard fumble recovery with three minutes left in the third.
After Poggiali's fourth touchdown pass of the day made it 42-2 midway through the fourth quarter, the Gators needed just three plays to score their first touchdown of the afternoon. On third-and-10 at his own 33, Logan Lee found Tyler Smith over the middle near midfield. Smith made the grab and broke through the secondary for a 67-yard touchdown, his fifth score of the season, and third of over 40 yards.
Oberlin closed the day's scoring with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard touchdown reception by Jackson Moore.
Lee completed 12 of 24 passes for 151 yards, while Smith gained over 100 yards receiving for the third time this season, finishing with six grabs for 117 yards. The Allegheny ground game struggled, as Jake Wilson finished with a team-best 28 yards on 11 carries.
The Gators' Matt Wetzel led both sides with a career-high 11 tackles, while teammate Nick Murgo finished with 10. Marcus Davenport made six stops, including two for loss and a sack.
Poggiali ended the day 27-for-38 through the air for 506 yards, with Robby Reinheimer making eight catches for 208 yards. Buckhannon ran 22 times for 65 yards and two scores, while Bennett Jackson made eight tackles to lead the Oberlin defense.
Allegheny wll now enter its bye week, before returning to action on Oct. 17, when they make the trek to Greencastle, Indiana to face off against DePauw.
